BEHIND THE SCENES- to my viewers & co-workers

severe storm team coverage

im really demanding

BUT...
it's because of my co-workers and our viewers

i'm demanding because i can be...
i can present the most difficult challenges to my co-workers
and somehow... it just becomes a fun group challenge that ends up building team work and friendship

you see
i don't only anchor the morning show,
 i also write/produce a 2 hour show
i was presented a "challenge" overnight
it proved to me...
what i already knew...
i have the best co-workers

in difficult, stressful times...
 my co-workers get it done
with pride, joy, and eagerness...
to keep our viewers safe and informed

after 1.5 hrs of sleep (busy day of mtgs & an appearance)
I come into work around 10:30pm...
i find my news director, ed reams,
eager and excited to keep our viewers safe
he hasn't slept yet.
he doesnt plan to
coffee and energy chrystal light.. in our future
we have "twitter" wars to see who can get the info first to viewers
we maintain this war overnight.. he helps me stay awake

assignment editor, terrance kelly, babysits the police scanner
thank goodness (this is usually my job)
he's on the phone left and right
he's getting information on deadly fires, accidents, etc
but he does this with a passion to help
desire to work hard to keep our viewers safe

our First Alert Storm Team meteorologists are yelling out warnings
the production staff gets them on air immediately
11pm anchor, val thompson, is such a trooper
he pretty much worked a 15 hr shift
no complaints, just smiles and determination

our morning reporter, amanda crawford,  comes in 2.5 hrs early
bearing a box of homemade muffins and a contagious smile
she sits down... i do not need to ask...
she's my assistant
somehow she reads my mind
and gets things done

the asst news director, kay norred,
comes in wearing an ABC hat, WHSV tshirt
she's ready to rock and roll
she brings out a bunch of snacks on the table
and she's helping me left and right
making phone calls, etc
she's a cheerleader despite only 3 hrs of sleep

during my twitter wars with my news director
we find other co-workers eager to help
reporter todd corrillo is off
but he's on the phone, he's outside getting photos, footage, information
because of his desire to help keep the Valley safe

two of our whsv photojournalists are called in
they immediately come in to work
smiles, laughs, good spirits

i get a call from daybreak meteorologist mallory
she can't sleep because of all the weather alerts
its in her nature to get the information to viewers asap
she comes in super early to help josh, who had been in overnight
(josh worked more than 14 hrs too)

they tag team with our anchors
and we air five hours of wall-to-wall severe weather coverage

new this morning anchor, ed, is on the desk
he's on his cell, he's making his calls
he gets information most journalists can't

my twitter, email, facebook and phone are flooded with messages
sources give us the inside scoop
viewers and friends give us their news stories
whsv viewers are in their basements, with their tv audio on
they follow along, stay informed, stay safe

all night and into the morning
they are sending us encouraging and informative messages
it's really overwhelming
but it the best way possible
the feeling you get...
when you ask yourself,
"how did i get so blessed?"

the morning production staff comes in
without skipping a heartbeat
they're making miracles happen
they never tell me... something can't be done
it's always done
my director goes with the flow
with the "challenges" his producer (me) presents to him
he allows me to be demanding
let's just say...
my production staff has spoiled me rotten

i'm demanding because our WHSV viewers expect the best
it's because our Valley viewers... practice the Golden Rule
they keep their neighbors safe
with the information we provide them

they hold us to the highest standards
and why shouldn't they?
they depend on us
to get late breaking news

and they are loyal
when josh asks, "take cover"
they take cover
when mallory asks, "stay away from windows"
they stay away from windows

but our Valley viewers do not stop there
they tweet, they facebook, they call, they email
not just us... but their fellow neighbors
they keep their neighbors safe
as we aim to do here at WHSV

i know i'm demanding
i only expect the best from the people i work with
but it's only because they can provide the best
and have yet to prove...
that i'm "too" demanding

I want to thank all of my hard working co-workers
you all truly impressed me today
not only did you work hard
you worked hard with no sleep
but the best attitude

the morning news coverage
was a lot about keeping our viewers safe
from the deadly storms that ripped through Virginia

I want to thank our viewers
not only for watching
but for your trust, your information, your support
you give us the "wind" beneath our wings

so until you expect less of us
i suppose...
we will just keep on... keepin' on

Thanks YAW =)

why do i stress about paper?

all i did... was PAPER today

i am the american psycho
as in the character played by christian bale
but only when it comes to paper

i spent the last 12 hours

contemplating
ecru? soft white? ecruwhite?
textured? embossed?

debating
calligraphy? engraved? thermography? letterpress? digital printing?
which im sure no one could tell the difference
at least i wouldn't be able to tell the difference

but what about the weight?
medium? heavy? ultra?
oh, definitely ultra heavy
has to be 110lbs.

really?
do i care?
is it worth spending 12 hours deciding?

apparently it is

i had an easier time buying my first house
my second house
finding and accepting my television job

and now...
im left to contemplate...

do i want double envelopes?

daycay at SNP~ it's free this wknd!

watta is one of the dogs
who has a mini closet that includes doggy couture (yes, juicy)
people often mistake him for a girl
(perhaps its the pink leash)

but... one trip to the Shenandoah Natl Park
changed his life
he became a REAL manly dog

SNP is one of my favorite parts of living in the Valley
it's full of beautiful hiking trails
and dozens of gorgeous creeks and waterfalls!

watta was scared at first on the hike
we even ran into a black bear
people ask me, was it a cub or mother bear?
i tell them, no... he was a teenage bear

anyways
watta was very afraid at first
making sure i was right behind him

but after his first hike
he became a brave hiking dog
not afraid of bears
not afraid of rabbits
nothing!

i credit SNP for making my dog so brave

and i highly recommend
taking a daycay this weekend to your national parks
after all, we do pay for them
and it is "FREE" this weekend for all!

trust me
you may feel lazy heading up there
but once you get to the top
take a deep breath
enjoy the beauties
and watch out for that teenage bear!

Behind the Scenes- Brats who work for WHSV

random newsroom coversations at 2am

in light of the courtroom battle between Barbie and Bratz
Amanda Crawford and I had an enlightening discussion
...human coffee tables & ET swings...

although the Judge decided against Barbie yesterday
we all know... Barbie is better than Bratz
at least she is to me.. and amanda

my first toy bought on american soil
is a Barbie
she had a sparkly long light blue dress
a long faux fur matchin coat
and in one press of a button,
she brushed her hair

my Barbie colletion grew to dozens and dozens
i even had a Michael Jackson Barbie (w/a white glove)
including a walk-in closet that was used as a Barbie community
equipped with everything a little girl dreams about
except an elevator

amanda and i are conversing about Barbie & Bratz at 2am
we both find out..
we were kinda jipped!
we must be the only two girls who never had a Barbie elevator

the ADD conversation turns into a "who was more bossy" contest

amanda's submission starts with her childhood tea parties

as the first born,
she would script out what her little sister and brother would say and do
that includes her brother's role as a human "coffee table"
she told me this... while i was drinking water
(so i spilled water all over me, thinking of Borat... just sayn'...)

i start my submission with my ET swing

i used to have the coolest ET swing inside my bedroom
my little cousins always wanted to swing in it
i thought i was so cool, standing at the top of the stairs
i'd lure my little cousins with candy and the swing
they'd crawl up the stairs
and after the halfway mark
i'd yell, "who told you to come up. go back down"
after they made it back down, frightened and scared
i'd smile and lure them up again
over... and over... and over again

btw. my ET swing completely freaked amanda out
she thinks ET is scary
my mom did, too
that's why i was only allowed 1 stuffed ET and 1 ET swing

i suppose amanda and i were bossy
don't blame us
blame our birth order!
but isnt that what you expect of first borns or only childs?

so, Barbie or Bratz?

i used to know how to ride a bike...

i got pretty good at riding my bike
i was pretty cool...
riding a bike w/ a pink banana seat and basket
i even mastered the "no hands" method

i remember a mosquito flew into my eye one day
when christina and i were riding our bikes in elementary school
it was her dad who taught me how to ride a bike

she was my sister, her dad was my uncle, her mom was my aunt
her pesky little brother..
well...
he was my pesky little brother who always asked so many questions
we used to find jars of mold behind the couch
they were bill's experiments

our parents always called us fish
because we would swim every day, sunrise to sundown
we were as tanned as we could be
we didn't care
we swam, and swam, and swam
unless we were making clothes for our little dolls

after the pool
christina's mom would wash my hair
i loved it when she washed my hair
she put conditioner on a comb
made sure my hair was detangled from the pool
but christina liked it when my mom washed her hair
my mom would splash massive amounts of water
i suppose she thought it was "refreshing"
i thought it was annoying getting water in my ear and all

those are my most vivid memories of elementary school
christina and i were like forest and jenny
really
we even wore the same clothes
made by her mother...
special one of the kind dresses
except christina always looked like a model
because she was (really, she was a model!)
i always looked like a ...
ok. we can skip this

christina and i were inseparable
until i moved to virginia

twenty years later
i find christina
on facebook

we talk
i cry

some things never change
we are still sisters

and she is still as beautiful as i remember

but some things *do* change

i no longer know how to ride a bike

as many daybreak viewers saw at the shenandoah speedway race*
(dont believe it when people say "it's like riding a bike")
that's a lie

*last year, i was in a "celebrity bike race" at the shenandoah speedway half time show... i had to ride a tricycle
no joke

extra butter for breakfast, please!

it's 6am
what's better than extra butter movie popcorn for breakfast?

as mallory talked about "popcorn" showers...
i immediately dreamed of movie popcorn
i ate while watching atlas shrugged this weekend

tom & i mentioned movie popcorn on the air
and before the break even cam up
mallory handed me popcorn!

yes! great breakfast !
thanks mallory for the popcorn showers & popcorn breakfast!

STARS ONLY~ exclusitivity, pardon my english?

"club members only"
"stars only"

you feel special being a part of it, don't you?
but... i think... being a "part" of it.. is the key

do you believe in things...
that are so exclusive...
that it becomes too exclusive?

meaning...
so exclusive..
that you're pretty much the only one?

i've been invited to a few events in my life
but never one- like this "exclusive" club pictured above
it's a location in DC

i believe there's always a right balance to everything
including "exclusitivity"

sidenote-
spell check doesnt read exclusitivity
and im sure im not using it grammatically correct
but im trying to make a point here
and google says exclusitivity is a word =)

sometimes...
you can "exclusive" yourself out of the radar

at least this "vip" club did.

the "white house" is for sale!

the white house is for sale!
you can buy it for just under $5 million!

ok, kidding.
but not kidding.

this is the white house replica
and instead of its pennsylvania address in washington d.c.
this house if located in mclean virginia

if i were to spend $5 mil on a replica...
i dont think it would be the white house

i'd rather choose...

the jefferson memorial (i'd find a living space)

or...

atlantis.
most certainly
with the shark tank and all

what about you?

happy birthday mr. president

i call him TJ
that's the type of relationship we have
it's his birthday today

this is a toast... to you

TJ has always been my favorite president
in the 4th grade
i wrote an amazing paper on Mr. Jefferson
stained it with tea and coffee
wrote it in calligraphy
and got an A+
winning!

i followed him to virginia
graduated from his university
i wrote several essays on TJ-
as president, as a scientist, as an architect, etc
cherished every moment at his alma mater W&M and Monticello

I also adore everything Jefferson.
Jefferson Hotel
Jefferson Vineyards
Jefferson Memorial
Jefferson's Portrait at the Governor's Mansion
Jefferson's Statue on Grounds
 Jefferson Parlor at the Homestead
even the Jefferson Wrap @ Old Dominion Cafe before it closed
I also lived on Jefferson Ave in Charlottesville =)

everywhere i go and see Jefferson
i have the need to take a picture with it

my 2 favorite places to brunch in virginia
also have relations to Jefferson

first favorite place to brunch is the Jefferson
i'm told TJ was fond of Spoonbread
the southern dish fast became my favorite, too

my second favorite is Keswick Hall
Fossett's is dedicated to Jefferson's personal chef, Edith Fossett

i used to order the mimosa brunch
an endless assortment of local southern gourmet dishes
doesn't look like they offer the all-you-can-dine/drink plan anymore

at any rate,
TJ, cheers!
ill have a drink of Vin de Trois from the Jefferson Vineyards!

who needs eggs when there are cupcakes for breakfast?!

this morning's breakfast on daybreak.
cupcakes from the cupcake company in mcgaheysville

pick from smores, peanut butter, pumpkin, grasshopper
which one who you think i tried?

if this isn't paradise

this used to be my lunch break...

palmetto park
boca raton

inspiring high fashion designers

do anchors wear shorts behind the desk?
the answer?
not exactly...
(unless the anchor spent a few days at the station covering hurricane wilma... but that's a once in a while scenario)

you see,
i wear more than shorts...
my usual dress consists of a full suit
i prefer skirt suits...
but that's only because i have the freedom to wear jeans/sweats underneath the full suit.
(thnx ed for pix)

why, you ask?
because it's FREEZING in the studios!

call me crazy,
but i think this new "trend"seen in the runways...
may be inspired by news anchors across the world!

i can't possibly be the only one who dresses this way,
right? right?
please tell me i'm right!

the day petey almost died

meet my sweet dog watta

meet the infamous petey of richmond

watta just wanted to play w petey
until petey bit watta's nose
petey then ended up in watta's mouth

it's a miracle petey survived the night
maybe birds also have nine lives

got a farmer's tan? our "agricultural expert" has the solution!

there are tricks to the trade...
and then...
there are tricks discovered behind the whsv daybreak scenes
...

if you GTL jersey shore style
(focusing on the "T" for tanning)
  no need to read further

for those who may not have time for 20 min sessions at the tanning salon
 or
luxury for cabo san lucas every month,
here's a tip... demonstrated below

our "agriculture expert" amanda crawford shows us...
how to get rid of the so-called farmers tan...

she is shown here using my MAC bronzer on her feet...
where she failed to rub her self-tanning lotion (w/glitter)

in 30 seconds, amanda has the perfect tanned feet
to go with her perfectly "tanned" legs

note...
thnx to this MAC bronzer
viewers are not blinded by my pale skin in the mornings...

wild & wonderful in west virginia... no joke.

the best thing about west virginia

greenbrier resort

a few years ago, i went for the first time...
it's been a great "local" weekend getaway ever since...

it's quite addicting...

first... they make their OWN chocolates
complimentary w/ any suite

indulge at one of the best spas in the region

after a long day of riding, golf, hiking or falconry...

my recommendations

hydrotherapy-
i was fond of the aromatherapy bath & the sulphur soak
ultimate solutions to hard work weeks
i wasn't too fond of the scotch spray & swiss shower

massages-
i tried the aromatherapy massage
it was worth every dollar
as for mike, he tried the reflex trio
he was impressed

greenbrier is also known for their delicious food
the main dining hall has the best atmosphere for a fancy southern dinner... i like breakfast though, at draper's...
if you like shrimp caesar salad, draper's has the best

take the bunker tour!
you will learn so much about U.S. History...
learn more about our politicians

then don't forget to make your reservations for your next trip!
you'll want to keep exploring and going back!

"emily" was so right about paris...

in the city.....
of blinding lights.....

no wonder emily wanted to visit paris
(devil wears prada)

my toilet paper is so... blanc...

my first orlando experience was in elementary school
my first memory of universal studios...
the toilet paper!
it was nickelodeon print
(the orange splotches, not the green slime)

i never paid much attention to toilet paper...
until my trip to paris

enough said.

triple grande low-fat iced caramel macchiato, make that quadruple

*yawn*
until my 4th cup of coffee

working Daybreak hours
my co-workers and i needs lots of substance to stay awake
it's our job to stay awake, so we can wake YOU up in the mornings!

for me...
it's 4-6 cups of regular coffee,
at least a dozen or so choclate covered expresso beans
often a cup of vanilla caramel tea to top it off

production assistant alden told me this morning "diet pills" are his trick!

ed needs at least 3 cups of coffee before the show ends at 7am

tom used to drink 5 hr energy (had the huge boxes from Costco) but he's down to only several cups of coffee and nutrigrain bars

amanda likes her dove chocolates and 4-5 cups of coffee
amanda says the dove choclates are good for her moral
she loves the "be the first to hit the dance floor" bits of inspiration
(she even thumbtacks them to her cubical partition)

unfornately, when i say "coffee"
i am referring to the icky regular coffee
(sometimes VIA... but not always)
why isn't there a starbucks around the corner, open at 3am?

this morning... i tried something new...
thnx to the advice of my news director, ed reams...
who often comes to my rescue w/ emergen-c or other interesting products...
meet energy wild strawberry (ignore the "artificial" on the label)

it's delicioso!
perhaps the reason, i yapped on and on on-air

how do you stay awake in the morning?

btw... ed drantch just asked me, "want to go to starbucks?"

#duh~!

combo meal for multi-taskers, please!

i've always imagined a world...
where i could multi-task to the max...
twitter/facebook/text on my apple iphone in 1 hand
a supersize chicken/fries/coke combo in the other hand!

imagination no more...

meet the world's most simple way...
to overeat fast food & be merry!

this beautiful model is showcasing
the combo all-in-one-cup meal!

enjoy ice cold coke (only reachable by straw)
mini chicken popcorn bites
crinkle-cut french fries
with a small place for sauce!

a true dream come true for those- with only one spare hand

@ lotte world in seoul, korea...
one of the world's coolest indoor amusement parks!

remember the saying... "lead by example?"

didn't mama always say... "lead by example!"
at least that's what my news director tells me

well, as our elected officials in Washington argue over the budget, with a deadline looming (midnight Friday)...
U.S. Senator, Joe Manchin of West Virginia, says he's giving up his salary during any federal government shutdown...

Manchin is asking his fellow lawmakers on Capitol Hill to do the same...

Meanwhile, the President is expected to resume budget talks with Speaker Boehner and Majority Leader Reid.

What do you think?  Is Sen Manchin trying to lead by example?

,,,

I will say... Sen. Manchin was the only candidate from West Virginia who took time to *FLY* in to our studio during our ASK THE CANDIDATE!

The Perfect Drift
true to his name

i had plans to attend the Kentucky Derby this year at Churchill Downs

unfortunately, something came up, as it always does...
so instead, we headed to Louisville this past weekend...
for my first "Kentucky Derby" experience....
... at the museum...

as you can see from the photo below,
i was dissapointed a whimsical custom made hat wouldnt be needed...
my pink scarf & frumpy lilly fleece would do...
=(

so at the museum, i met a horse
i thought he was a stuffed horse, because he wouldnt move
then i looked closely...
he was drifting away
to my pleasant surprise...
his name.. happened to be PERFECT DRIFT

these are the beautiful hats i will not be wearing on the first Saturday of May

Bringin' Home the Bacon... Chapstick...

I'm addicted to lipgloss.
In my purse alone, I found a collection of Blue Colada, Frozen Daiquiri, Juicy Pop & Mentha Mint... and Pineapple (not pictured here)
waiting for me at home...
I have more than a hundred tubes
including a collection of lancome juicy tubes
(thnx in part to one of my best friends, Melissa)
but
BACON CHAPSTICK?

 So how delicious is this
"BACON LIP BALM"
"because everything should taste like bacon?"
we'll discuss on WHSV Daybreak tomorrow!

you'd be surprised what else... you can get "baconized"

good news? it's "MADE IN U.S.A."

Flying Shark in the OBX!

It's a Bird! It's a Plane! No, it's a SHARK kite!
How beautiful the shark flew high in the air @ OBX
...
until i took over
he was never the same again

Heart Attack on a Stick, Please

It's a heart attack on a stick, and it's oh-so-delicious!

I look like a what???

BEHIND THE SCENES- This morning in the WHSV Newsroom, we are talking about all sorts of things from bacon, veggie tales to animals.  My co-workers and I are trying to figure out... what animals we resemble.  Daybreak Reporter, Amanda Crawford, says I look like a mouse. I think she looks like a little baby squirrel.  New This Morning Anchor, Ed Drantch, resembles a little terrier, perhaps a little westie.  My co-anchor, Tom Dempsey, reminds me of a panda bear... but perhaps it's because he has a plastic panda on his desk.  Amanda told Tom he reminds her of a wolf, Tom liked that better than a panda.

Yuna's Blog

Welcome to my BLOG~! thanks to Amanda Crawford for helping with with my first Blog Log~!
